IRHF 2006

IslandRoots2006

At this festival we were truly celebrating our Sister City relationship with Key West and continued to invite all 'The Conchs' (what Key Westers are called) back home to enjoy a weekend full of learning about our heritage through delicious Bahamian food, exciting Bahamian games, Beautiful Bahamian art and crafts, fabulous Bahamian music and entertainment.

Educationally, the festival focused on the conservation of our beloved Conch and how we can preserve them and our reefs for generations to come.  We invited Dr. Megan Davis who began The Conch Farm in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos to come and share information on the life and preservation of the conch.  She and her crew also filmed some important information gathered from the reefs just off our shores.

conchtrainThe school children created a display on the conch and even had a live conch there to help illustrate their information.  Games and special events featured the conch, with a Conch Cracking Contest, Conch Salad Eating Contest and there was even a Conch Style Dance Class with the help of our Rake and Scrape Band!  The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band returned to our shores for another fantastic marching display and Pop Band entertainment in the evening.  The Maypole was plaited, Junkanoo rushed the streets, there were many arts and crafts displayed, delicious Bahamian food and drink was available from morning to night.  Stage entertainment was excellent with locals performing as well as performers from Nassau.  Key West brought a very informative display from the Lofton B. Sands African Bahamian Museum.  A true highlight of this festival was 'The Conch Train' that gave tours of New Plymouth non stop throughout the weekend.  Delightfully decorated with Androsia cloth, bright pink with conch shells, the train could be seen full of passengers eager to have a little breeze cool them off while exploring the streets of our little community.

The Reef Relief Environmental Center was open to help develop the theme of conservation of our reefs, beaches and sealife. This was the beginning of the Festival Committee's hope to develop the festival into an event that featured the entire island and all that it has to offer!

A festival tradition of worshipping together and giving thanks on Sunday brought the Festival to a close with everyone wishing each other well and safe journey home to return back to Green Turtle Cay as quickly as possible, especially for the 4th Annual Festival in 2007!
